This is a story about the stories we tell ourselves. The motivating stories that move us forward, and the ones that hold us back, such as when we make excuses for ourselves).
When speaking about the energy-producing benefits of movement, I often tell audiences that I coined the acronym “H.I.I.T” (high intensity interval training) – and then tell them I’m joking. But, the truth is, I’ve been practicing these short spurts of high intensity aerobic exercise for decades – but someone else beat me to the punch with the naming of the acronym.
So, I want to get credit for being the one to declare this new acronym – GUNK.
GUNK – Got Up, No Knees
It stands for “Got Up, No Knees.” Let me explain.
I learned how to surf late in life – and so popping up from a push-up position to standing just didn’t come natural to my body. For years I would pop-up into a kneeling position, then stand up from that. Not cool! But, I told myself that it was the best I could do…heck, I wasn’t a spring chick anymore.
Well, yesterday I decided that my “story” was crap! So I put just a bit more effort into it and guess what? I was able to GUNK! In other words, I got up without my knees. And, when I did, I screamed, “I GUNKed it!”
It makes me think…what else have I told myself that I couldn’t do? And what stories have I spun to hold me back?
Are you carrying around some GUNK yourself? Is there anything you’ve wished you could do but told yourself that you’re too old? Too inexperienced? What’s your story?
No excuses…GUNK it!
