It’s a show-down: milk vs designer milk.
Soda sales are down – so soda companies are branching out. A couple of months ago, Coca Cola came out with a new “designer” milk called Fairlife. For more than twice the price of regular cow’s milk, the manufacturer seperated the different components of milk – and then put them back in slightly different combinations.
Is it worth the extra moo-lah? I don’t think so. Heck, that “50% more protein” (as the label brags) works out to be just 5g protein. You can get more than that in just a single egg – and so many other foods that you’re probably already eating.

To get the calcium and protein we all need for strong bones, regular dairy milk is just fine. Most of the milks available in the grocery stores no longer even have the hormones that some consumers were concerned with.
If you can’t tolerate the lactose (milk sugar can causes gas and diarrhea in some people that are missing the hormone, lactate), there’s always LactAid milk. LactAid is also available in tablet or drop form so you can still enjoy dairy products – without the uncomfortable side effects that affect some people.
Iif you’re sensitive to dairy protein, look at soy milk as an option. It contains just as much protein as cow’s milk – and it’s available in unsweetened variety, if you want fewer calories. You can also find soy yogurt and soy ice cream, too.
Many of the other “milks” (almond, cashew, hemp, and coconut) are very popular. But, ask yourself why you’re drinking them. They have very little protein. While unsweetened varieties are available, most of them are loaded with sugar.
But, for most of us, it boils down to taste, doesn’t it? What milk do you like?
